—  Our Story  —

Pink Owl Coffee is more than just your average run-of-the-mill coffee shop and we offer more than just coffee. Pink Owl Coffee provides a Zen retreat from the pressures of daily life for the local community.

Pink Owl Coffee is owned and operated by Joe Carlo and Saandra Bowlus, who moved to San Rafael in 2016.   Saandra is a breast cancer survivor and Pink Owl Coffee derives its name partly from the desire to support women in this important endeavor. We hope to grow to the point of contributing 10% of annual revenue to breast cancer research and support for women.

We offer brewed coffees, brewed and steeped teas, coffee beans by-the-bag, and teas by-the-bag. All our coffees are made from organic fair trade coffee beans sourced worldwide, and roasted by our own company roasters. We roast all of our own gourmet coffee that is sourced from 4 direct farmer relationships for our farm to cup options and source all of our non-direct farmer green bean coffee from fare trade buyers only. We are currently opening up our second location in Petaluma and are a fast-growing local favorite in Marin, Sonoma and surrounding counties. Coffees include Expresso, Ethiopia, Columbia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brazil, Nicaragua, Kenya AA, Kona and others. Teas include brewed and steeped loose-leaf, muddled fruit and herb, iced, and others. We also offer coffee flights for the adventurous types.

We also offer canned teas, bottled cold brew, and bottled water. Our retail section includes coffee makers, coffee cups, Aeropress, V-60 pourover kits, Hoodies, Tshirts, Hats tea steepers, tea strainers, grinders, and other home décor.

Now open: Pink Owl Pantry Bakes and cooks small bites, including home recipes of Vegan Banans chocolate walnut bread, various cookies and Blueberry Cinnamon coffee cake s, avocado toast etc.

In this episode we discuss:

– How to start a café serving specialty coffee

– What marketing tools you should use

– How to go about branding your cup, merchandise, etc.

 – Why Joey and Sandra ultimately decided to roast their own coffee

 – Mistakes they made and you can avoid

– The types and number of products a café should offer, and how Sandra finds the best deals and quality for their offering

– How Joey chooses the equipment for the café and whether used coffee gear is a good idea

 – A few ideas on how to finance a coffee shop, drawing on Joey’s experience in the finance field

There is much more wisdom in this podcast and, yes, it is almost 2 hours long. I believe that the shared know-how and value is incredible, so I decided to keep it as is.
